Jeder Besucher der Seychellen kommt unweigerlich auf dem internationalen Flughafen auf Mahé an. Die einzige Start- und Landebahn läuft entlang dem türkisblauen Wasser und lässt das Touristenherz höher schlagen. Obwohl Mahé die größte Insel des Archipels ist, weist sie dennoch nur eine Länge von 27 km und eine Breite von 12 km auf und ist aufgrund ihrer Größe auch zum wirtschaftlichen und politischen Zentrum geworden, wodurch sie aber nichts von ihrer Schönheit und ihrem Charme verloren hat.
 
Hügelige, teilweise schon bergige Landschaft zeichnet Mahé aus. Der höchste Punkt, der Morne Seychellois, ist mit seinen 905 m ein perfekter Aussichtspunkt über die Hauptstadt Victoria.
In vielerei Hinsicht gehört Mahé mit den bergigen Formationen, der üppigen Vegetation und den insgesamt 75 Stränden zu den spektakulärsten Inseln.
 
Obwohl jährlich sehr viele Touristen angelockt werden, findet man immer nur eine Hand voll Menschen an den Stränden, die den weichen Sand, die sich wiegenden Palmen und das tropische Wasser genießen.
Mahé verfügt über eine große Bandbreite an unterschiedlichsten Unterkünften. Sie reicht von Ferienwohnungen über Gästehäuser bis hin zu mondänen Hotels. Man kann die Tage auf unterschiedlichste Weise verbringen: Tauchen oder einen der Wanderwege im „Morne Seychellois National Park“ durch die satte Natur nehmen, einen ortsansässigen Künstler in seinem Studio besuchen oder einfach den Tag am Strand verbringen.
 
Victoria ist eine kleine Stadt, die man am besten zu Fuß besichtigt. Auf dem täglichen Markt (außer sonntags) herrscht ein buntes Treiben, wo Fischhändler, Obstverkäufer und Künstler ihre Ware anbieten.
Die Hauptstadt kann außerdem mit mehreren Banken, zwei Kathedralen, einer Moschee, einem Hindu-Tempel, einer Bibliothek und zwei Stadien aufwarten. Der Uhrturm, der an Big Ben angelehnt ist, ist und bleibt aber die größte Attraktion.
 
Der Botanische Garten gibt die Möglichkeit, mehr oder weniger alle einheimischen Pflanzen an einem Ort zu sehen. Seit Gründung des Gartens vor ca. einem Jahrhundert ist er heute bis auf eine Größe von 15 ar gewachsen.
 
Da 90% der Gesamtbevölkerung auf Mahé leben, ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass hier das Nachtleben wesentlich lebendiger ist, als auf den Nachbarinseln.
Am besten erkundet man Mahé im Auto. Von den Küstenstraßen, die entlang der fabelhaften Strände führen, kommt man bequem ins Landesinnere. Während man über gewundene Bergstraßen durch die dichte Vegetation fährt, bekommt man einen Eindruck, in welch unvergleichlichem Naturparadies die Seychellois leben.
